The Rebel Reader

Hey rebelionists,

I wanted to chat to you about the need to read – every day.

I came across a quote this morning from Rebecca Solnit ‘A book is a heart that only beats in the chest of another.’

I truly believe that it’s not enough to listen to audios and go to seminars to learn from the best filmmakers but to read books from those champions and mentors who might not be with us any longer (Seneca, Ghandi, B. Franklin, Mandella, Lao Tzu come to mind.)

The knowledge that can be gained from reading is immeasurable even if it’s just 15min a day since I know most of us have the excuse of having no time to ourselves.

Some people may think that reading is a waste of time since action speaks louder than words. But I tend to disagree. It is a waste of time if you don’t do anything with the knowledge you’ve gleaned from a book. Therefore, it’s not enough to read a book and then place it back on the shelf. You need to highlight sentences that resonate with you, make notes how you may implement it into your life, and reread them over and over on a continuous basis till it becomes part of your makeup.

Almost all successful and wealthy people read on a constant basis and so should us filmmakers.

There’s not excuse.

I challenge you to read two books a week. One, a self help book during the day and two, a biography during the night. The way to do it is by reading between 15-30min a day either early in the morning, after you wake up, or during your lunch break or on your way to work. Then, before you go to bed read a good actors or film biography for 15min.

I’ve put a link below to Tai Lopez’ talk about smart reading which if you haven’t watched yet, you should.

So don’t delay and open a book today!
